FREESONG #6
Praise to the Lord, the Almighty
by Joachim Neander ; Translation by Catherine Winkworth

Welcome to FreeSongs from WholeHearted Worship

The sixth FREESONG is a contemporary arrangement of the classic hymn Praise to the Lord, the Almighty by Joachim Neander. (Other songs are also available.)

About the Song
Praise to the Lord, the Almighty was one of about sixty hymn texts Joachim Neander wrote in his brief 30 years in the late 1600's. Neander, a German Reformed pastor in Dusseldorf, Germany, was a theologian as well as songwriter. His hymns were known for their triumphant character.

This great German hymn would not be know to us, though, had it not been for English-born Catherine Winkworth, who, in 1863 -- almost 200 years after Neander -- translated the text into English. And thanks to a collection of hymns that was published in England in 1904, this great hymn has been sung for the last 100 years in the English-speaking Church.

About Hymns in Contemporary Worship
We at WholeHearted Worship are very enthusiastic about renewing hymns so that contemporary worshipers can have, as part of their worship, the added testimony from previous generations. We are finding, among the contemporary worshipers we talk with, a real desire for greater connectedness with the faith from previous generations.
Many, who had given up on hymns, are discovering "buried treasure," as it were, when the lyrics and melodies of these great hymns are done with arrangements that use rhythms and instruments that we are more familiar with. We hope this song, for instance, will become one of many hymn that you use regularly in your worship.
